Back to Socialtext Documentation.

Socialtext makes organizing your team's files a lot easier. You can attach files to Socialtext pages just as you can attach files to e-mails, except Socialtext pages don't get lost in your inbox. What's more, Socialtext will show you all the attachments in the workspace, making hunting around for attachments a thing of the past.

When viewing a page, a list of its attachments appears in the "Attachments" box in the sidebar.

Attach a file or image

Click on the Upload files button to add one or more files while viewing or editing a page.

-uploadfiles.png

Click Browse and find the file you would like to attach. The file will immediately be uploaded. Repeat the process for any additional files. Click Done when you have no more files to attach.

After every file upload, the page will be refreshed and you will see the image if you uploaded an image or you will see a link to the file if you uploaded a non-image file.

If you upload a file while editing, the link or image will appear at the cursor. If you upload a file while viewing a page, the link or image will be inserted at the top of the page. You may use the editor to move them afterwards.

Image Sizing

Click the Edit button to open an editing window. Make sure you are in Rich Text mode. This will display the images in your page. Click on an image to go to the image menu. The Attached Image menu will appear.

Choosing an image size

-image-menu.png

Images are "Scaled to fit" in the page when they are uploaded. You may choose a different size. A small image is 100 pixels wide, a medium image is 300 pixels wide, and a large image is 600 pixels wide.

Click "Save" to change the image size and leave the image menu. You will return to the editing window. You will still need to click "Save" at the top of the page.

The original image is always available via the link to it in the Attachments sidebar.

Choosing custom image sizes

Fill out either the height or width of an image if you need a custom size. Only one of these fields can be filled out; the other will be scaled automatically so that the image will stay proportional to the original image size. If you'd like to distort image proportions on purpose, try Editing images in Wiki Text mode

More image options

In the image menu, you can click "More options" to display extra menu options. You don't have to upload multiple versions in multiple workspaces or on multiple pages. Just use the additional options to select an image on a different page or even an image in a different workspace.

If you fill in Link text, you will get a link to the image instead of the image itself in the page.

In the example below, the wikitext generated (circled in yellow) is to link to an image on a workspace named foo, on a page named "logos".

Moving the image

You can move the image by pressing the mouse button and dragging the image within the edit window.

Or, for precise control, you can edit the page in Wiki Text mode to move the image wikitext to another part of the page. The image wikitext is within curly brackets. Copy, cut, and paste it wherever you'd like it to appear on the page.

Image wikitext must be surrounded by whitespace, either spaces within a line or blank lines within a page.

Renaming an image

To rename an image, you will need to rename it on your hard drive and upload it again as an attachment.

The image menu allows you to type a filename into a text box, but you cannot use this feature to rename attached images.

Attached files

You upload non-image files in exactly the same way as images. A link to the file is inserted in the page. In Rich Text mode, the attachment will be represented by a WikiWidget. Click on the WikiWidget to edit the properties of the Attached file, or change it to link to an attachment on a different page or in a different wiki.

Remove a file or image

While viewing a page, you can simply delete the file to remove it from the text. To remove the attachment from the page, after you click Save go to your Attachments sidebar. Click on the delete button (red button surrounding a '-') beside the file you wish to remove.

-Page-View-Attachments.png

If there were links or images in the page and you delete their corresponding files, there will be broken links in the page. Broken attachment links appear bright green.

(Accidentally) duplicated attachments

If you upload an image more than once, all of the identically named images will appear in the Attachments sidebar box, but only the most recently uploaded image will be displayed. You may click on any link to see the corresponding version of the image in your Web browser. You might want to use the Attachments sidebar to delete extra copies.

If you upload a non-image file more than once, all of the identically named
files will appear in the Attachments sidebar box, but only the most
recently uploaded file will have links in the page. You may click on any link to download the corresponding version of the file. You might want to use the Attachments sidebar to delete extra copies.

Attaching several files using a Zip archive

To attach several files all at once, add them all to a zip file (use WinZip or MacZip or the native ZIP tools on your platform). Attach the zip file to the page. When the file is uploaded, you will see a 'Unpack' icon (yellow box with green arrow) next to the zip file (here, beside Icons.zip):

-ZipAttachB4Ex.png

Click the 'unpack' icon to have all the files in the Zip file individually attached to the page:

View all workspace attachments

To see all the files attached within the workspace, click on What's New on the Workspace Toolbar . Below the toolbar to the right you will see All Files. From this global list of attachments you can sort, delete, and download files. See All files for more information. The most recently uploaded attachments will initially appear at the top.

See also WikiWidgets to create links to attachments in Rich Text mode.
