Druids
For druids, HoTs require more mana than our normal heal, but also take less time (rejuvenation is the only instant heal a druid has and is a HoT). If you are a resto druid, you likely have spent talent points that give your regrowth spell a much higher chance to crit. You may also have invested in talents that decrease the cast time of your healing touch, making it only slightly longer than regrowth (the HoT) and a lot more mana efficient.
As a resto druid, I have found that for me, the most mana efficient way of healing (that heals enough to keep a tank alive) is to cast my regrowth (HoT) and supplement with healing touch (normal heal). If there is a lot of damage, I may also stack rejuvenation on my target as well. Generally, I only rarely use my highest rank regrowth and healing touch (particularly outside MC). On my screen I keep my highest ranked rejuvenation, ranks 10, 7 and 5 healing touch and ranks 9 and 7 regrowth. Most often, I cast rank 7 regrowth and then supplement with either a rank 5 or rank 7 healing touch depending on the damage. If I am one of the primary healers for the tank, I may use rank 9 regrowth and rank 10 or 7 healing touch depending on how much damage is being taken.
If you are not resto spec, the heals you use will differ. Regrowth will be a mana sink and healing touch will have a very long cast. Rejuvenation may be all that much more valuable to you.
The key to selecting your heals is knowing how much healing power you have and staying as mana efficient as possible! This is going to differ for everyone based on spec and gear--learn what your abilities are!
