I am thinking of getting a Second Life island for various community projects I'm involved. Currently, I'm thinking of hosting the #joiito ircchannel, the We Know and We No Warcraft guilds, etoy, iCommons and various other things. Please let me know your thoughts and lets plan stuff here.

Name

What should we call this island?

I had to choose a name so I chose Kula. Kula (wp) is a ceremonial exchange system on Papua New Guinea which I firsted saw used as an example of a gift economy (wp) by Marcel Mauss (wp) in the gift.

Unfortunately that's also the name of my personal company so it is slightly ambiguous. I put a message in the registration asking to be allowed to change the name later. We'll see if they will let us. - Joi Ito

ourmedia.org - is a free place for folks to store video, audio, images or text. It's a front-end community to the Internet Archive. Built with money from Broadband Mechanics - it has recently gotten 501 c 3 status and if soliciting money to help build more coolioo features, Open APIs, collections, better tagging - for the people.

StructuredBlogging.org - the notion of a compatibility box for microcontent. First version is a plug-in for Wordpress and Moveable Type and Perl and php libraries. 100% supersetting microformats, but also supports RSS namespaces, OPML, and other burgeoning formats - which together- will give us a smooth, transprent world - where no end-user has to participate in format wars. Paid for by PubSub and Broadband Mechanics - so far - getting it's 501 c 3 act together - as we speak - looking for additional funding for Open APIs, more schemas, more tool plug-ins

Lower Eastside Girls Club - need a small space to build a media gallery (video, animation, audio, photo, SL sculpture) for the Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York. These are some very hip urban teen girls (let's make a collaboration with Japanese girls at our girlsclubworldwide, we already have a Chiapas Maya girl photog collaboration), and we'd have a sister site in the Teen Grid. In RL we are in last capital campaign to break ground 2007 on Manhattan community media/web/green/ISP center. It's happening! And that's my pitch. Thanks. dave dot pentecost at gmail dot com. (see my volunteer offer below)

Free and Open Island

We are a group of people that met on second life and now looking to have an island for everything free and open, like free software, creative commons, open content, etc.
We have our own Wiki athttp://freeandopenisland.org/wiki/
The space we are looking for is growing and is shown here:http://freeandopenisland.org/wiki/index.php?title=Land_Reservations

We don't mind paying some "rent" but our main problem at the moment are the setup costs.

People

sign up if you'd like to participate in this project - Please list your SL name here if you have one

Joi Ito - Joi Ito on Second Life
Boris Anthony - Bopuc Asturias
Heather Ford
Pete Barr-Watson
Alex Lam - I have a dormant account that's been accumulating SL money. :) Will donate.
alj thatcher - using a buggy linux client and my ping is over 200 from Taipei though plus I'm new=)
What would be interesting actually would be to rent out portions of the island for real
income and use that to generate money for real world NGOs etc. I.E. instead og a trust fund or a grant some virtual land could help fund the EFF etc.
Marc Canter
Verrin Saito - This sounds like fun, I'd love to help out with this somehow, though I reverted my account back to a basic one after being pushed out of two properties by larger developments. I would change it back in a sec to help out with this though.

Tom Munnecke you might be interested in following how Better World Island evolved from Omidyar.net http://www.omidyar.net/group/netchange/news/26/
Evonne Heyning BWI now represents a handful of nonprofit projects including Camp Darfur, the PeaceTiles Project and ManorMeta, the machinima/video series we're building here at Amoration Studio. We're looking to link more of the Better World activities inworld and invite speakers in who are taking on worldchanging themes in their work. I know they're looking for larger locations for the Camp Darfur project if you'd be willing to host a few thousand refugees on your land.

Robert Berger - Zar Zadoq in Second Life
I would be glad to help out on projects, particularly TeeVee things. I've done a bit of coding and building in SL. Can't wait till they have a real language for scripting though (at least real arrays and hashes)

Tektonic9 Underall - I was hoping to help out in some way. I really have no idea what I could do as of yet. This might be able to tie in with a radio station a friend of mine is running and she might be interested in helping build also. We shall see.

Dav Yaginuma - Digo Bomazi in Second Life
I can hack code.

Mark Frisk - Sky Seattle in Second Life. Fairly new SL resident, but I find it fascinating and would love to pitch in on this project.

Bredren Spearmann - new to SL but very interested in this new island. Hook me up, yo.

Lee Wilkins - Echo Winger in SL. Would love to help out wherever possible

Nic Suzor - Nic Marx in SL. From QUT and Creative Commons Australia, very interested in helping out and running some events in world. I'm particularly interested in seeing what new business models and creative processes emerge in SL if we remove the contraints of artificial scarcity - when many objects are freely redistributable and modifiable.

Mark Perry -- FromMarkPerry's Hand in SL : working on Open Access to Knowledge project whilst on sabbatical in Brisbane (QUT), but also IP/IT researcher

Gabe Wachob -- Zuru Cult in SL - trying to join the #joiito group

Karsten W. Rohrbach -- Hiro Hansen in SL, trying to hack lindenscript, especially external comms.

Max Niederhofer- Max Huszar in SL. Would very much like to design and build.

Dave Pentecost - Usu Ventura in SL. Would like to help (I'm video, TV producer), but also need a small space to build a media gallery (video, animation, audio, photo, SL sculpture) for the Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York (see pitch above!).

Suw Charman (TiddlesMcNubbin Goodnight) - I'm in. Would it be possible to donate a little bit of land to the Open Rights Group? I know that it's probably not on your list of organisations to support, but we really do need all the help we can get right now.

Erich Solomon in SL. You'll recognize me when you see me...

Brent Schlenker - 2L name: Rightbrain Musketeer - Very happy to help out!

Licentious Maladay - I am interested in helping in charitable projects. Please add me to the group.

When you tire of the isolation and black void surrounding your private island, and are ready to visit the mainland, give me a call, Prokofy Neva : )

Zenigma Suntzu - I have created a remote control which changes the music or movie URL for all 4 sims for the coliseum area:

The operator wears the "Joi URL Control".

Then, to change the url type:

/13 music http://somemusic.url/whatever

or

/13 movie http://somemovie.url/whatever

To clear the urls use:

/13 movie

or

/13 music

The control communicates with 4 "Joi URL Slave" objects underneath the bleachers in each of the 4 sims, first by shout (instant) and then by email (within seconds) as a backup.

(This should be reliable except in cases where SL's email servers are running extremely slowly.)

buridan Simon has copies of the control, which should be marked no mod / no xfer before giving it to anyone.

Catharina Bethlehem - SL name; Catharina Jacobus

I run a group in Second Life for a free and open island; the group consists of active people that would like to help and work together; within the group there are also several people that would like a plot to do their own thing, concerning free software, free culture, etc. We meet every first sunday of the month.

I've tryed to contact several people involved in the Kula Island, but so far no luck. I've also noticed that the island is already quite full but there is no active community yet. Also a lot of the stuff built on the island is "closed", so not even free to copy; very odd for a CC Island.
